Cabbage Roll

Today I’m sharing this awesome Cabbage Roll recipe that a friend of mine made for her family the other night.  I have made cabbage roll before and it we love it. This is a very easy recipe to make, you can even make this ahead of time.

Cabbage roll is doesn’t requires a lot of your time. You can even prepare this during weekend. I know some of you out there don’t have time to cook everyday.  However, that doesn’t give us as excuse to eat fast food all the time either.  If you put time on preparing your food on the weekend, it actually help your week.

Ingredients
Filling and Wrapper
  • 1 head Cabbage
  • 1 lb Ground Meat (adjust the meat if you are planning on making more)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 ½ tsp pepper
  • ½ chopped onion you can use one whole medium size onion if you like a lot of onions.
  • 1 cup rice cooked
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 cloves garlic crushed
  • 1 beaten egg
  • cheese any cheese you want if you like having cheese on the top you can but this is optional.
For The Sauce
  • 1 8 oz tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp lemon juice

Instructions
  1. Pre-heat the oven to 350 deg.
  2. Boil a large pot of salted water.
  3. Once the water is boiling, add the whole head of cabbage and let is cook for about 5 to 10 minutes. Do no over cook it that way the leaves won't get damage.
  4. In a mixing bowl, beat the egg and milk. Combine the ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic, onion, and rice.
  5. When the cabbage is done boiling, take it out from the water and remove the core using a small knife. Separate the leave one at a time, and be careful not the damage them.
  6. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the tomato sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice. Mix until it’s well combined.
  7. Lay out a cabbage leaf and scoop about 4 tbsp (1/4 cup) of the mixture in. Roll it up.
  8. When you finished rolling up everything, make sure that you pour about ¼ of the sauce mixture. Arrange your cabbage roll in the pan and cover them with the remaining sauce.
  9. Cover with aluminum foil, and baked it for an hour or until he filling is cook.
  10. When it's done cooking, remove from the oven. Serve it hot or warm and you can top it with your favorite cheese.

  1. Anna, I got my stuffed cabbage roll recipe from my late honorary grandmother (who was a Russian-born German with maybe some Polish thrown in for good measure). Her daughter and I carry on the tradition, making a huge batch at a time for her freezer and mine a few times a year. We precook the onion but not the rice. Everyone does it a little differently, but I’ve never met a cabbage roll I didn’t like! 😀

  2. Cabbage rolls are one of my most favourite things in life and I wish I wasn’t so lazy with cooking cause they are honestly not that difficult . Looks so delicious.
